Staff of the School of Tourism, and Hospitality Management.
The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Tourism & Hospitality Management (STHM) was successfully reaccredited by the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE) in July 2018.
STHM has been an accredited member of THE-ICE, a not-for-profit organisation that provides international programme accreditation, since 2012 after years of hard work enhancing academic quality in teaching, learning, and student satisfaction as well as providing a professional service to STHM students.
Associate Professor Thomas Bauer, Acting Head of School, stated that the reaccreditation recognises the continuous dedication and effort of all staff in the School.
In order to achieve THE-ICE accreditation, institutions must meet the fourteen (14) criteria set out in THE-ICE Standards of Excellence, such as Status of Institution, Governance and Administration, Vision, Mission & Objectives, Courses/Programmes, Curriculum and Graduate outcomes, Approach to teaching and learning, Planning, Programme review & quality assurance mechanisms, level of institutionalisation, Physic al resources & facilities, student support services to name a few.
Thus, as part of the reaccreditation process, THE-ICE auditor Dr Andy Nazarechuk conducted a site audit at the Laucala Campus in early 2018.
During his visit Dr Nazarechuk met with staff, students, alumni and industry partners to evaluate the quality of the Tourism and Hospitality programmes delivered by STHM and measure these against THE-ICE Standards of Excellence.
Dr Dawn Gibson, Senior Lecturer at STHM, said, “the accreditation application process was both demanding and educational because our programmes were benchmarked against THE–ICE’s Standard of Excellence which contains fourteen (14) major areas that the School and University are required to comply with.”
International accreditation benefits students by enhancing the profile of their qualifications and improving their employment opportunities. For prospective students, THE-ICE profiles more than 100 accredited programmes in tourism, hotel management, events, sports tourism and marketing on their website.
THE-ICE supports its member institutions through a range of education development initiatives, including the annual International Panel of Experts (IPoE) Forum and Benchmarking Roundtable Series, and seeks to provide relevant information to potential students about their study options.
For international institutions, governments, tourism organisations, and industry, THE-ICE provides a collaborative global network of like-minded people who value excellence in tourism and hospitality education.
