A two-day workshop organised by the office of the Vice-President Regional Campuses and Estates and Infrastructure (RC and EI) of The University of the South Pacific, held a workshop on Quality Management from 10-11 December 2018 at the University’s Statham Campus at Laucala, Suva.

The introductory workshop on “Understanding and Implementing ISO 9001: 2015 – Quality Management System” included Regional Campus Directors and staff of the Estates and Infrastructure Division of the University.

The workshop, which was facilitated by Ms Sonia Shivangni, Training Officer at the Fiji National University, will enable the Campuses to prepare for the USP’s vision for ISO9001 Certification as outlined in the New Strategic Plan 2019-2024.

Dr Giulio Paunga, Vice-President Regional Campuses and Estates and Infrastructure, said that as the University progresses with improvements in standards, the workshop provided an opportunity for the Campus directors and the Estates and Infrastructure Section to have a thorough understanding and sharing of information on critical issues regarding the latest developments on ISO9001:2015-Quality Management Systems.

“It is important that participants are able to identify gaps in services, physical infrastructure, human resources, etc, and we work in the next Strategic Plan period to address them,” Dr Paunga said.

Topics covered in the workshop included;:

-          Scope of Quality Management systems;

-          Normative references;

-          Terms and definition of ISO 9001 certification;

-          Understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties;

-          Determining the scope of QMS;

-          QMS and its processes;

-          Leadership;

-          Planning and

-          Support.

The Regional Campus Directors meeting concluded on Friday, 14 December 2018, where the Campus Directors used the week to draft a Comprehensive Plan for 2019.

As part of their visit to the Laucala Campus, the Campus Directors also participated in the University's 50th Anniversary closing dinner, as well as the farewell of Professor Rajesh Chandra, Vice-Chancellor and President of USP.
