Honourable Scott Morrison MP, Prime Minister of Australia delivers his address at the University’s Laucala Campus.
The Honourable Scott Morrison MP, Prime Minister of Australia announced a new partnership of $84 million between Australia and The University of the South Pacific (USP) for the next six (6) years.
The announcement was made as part of Prime Minister Morrison’s address at the University’s Laucala Campus on 18 January 2019.
The Honourable Prime Minister highlighted that this agreement would see Australia support efforts to invest in the young, passionate, vibrant and intelligent people of the region, through focusing on improving the quality of teacher education and through the education of students at the tertiary level in fields such as economics, human resource management and tourism management.
USP, he emphasised, has a unique role in developing skills, needed to drive the region’s development and economic growth long into the future.
Last year the University celebrated its 50th Anniversary, which Prime Minister Morrison said was a remarkable achievement and added Australia was proud to be associated with USP over the longer term.
According to Prime Minister Morrison, the partnership would make higher education accessible around the region by making the University more affordable for young Pacific students.
“It will also enable USP to lead research ‘of the region in the region’ and to showcase Pacific heritage and talent worldwide,” he stated.
Prime Minister Morrison noted that this would also promote greater linkages between USP and Australia’s tertiary education sector.
Mr Winston Thompson, Pro-Chancellor and Chair of USP Council expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Prime Minister Morrison, his Government and to the people of Australia for the new partnership.
Mr Thompson also acknowledged the Australian Government for their substantial and steadfast support provided to the University over the last 50 years, and added that this support has immeasurably raised the University’s quality and international standing as a research and teaching institution.
