One of the cultural performances at the USP Krishna Janamastami celebration 2019.

On Friday 16thAugust, members of the University community came together in the evening to celebrate joyous transcendental event, Krishna Janamastami at the ICT Lecture Theatre.

According to the followers of Vedic tradition, the occasion commemorates advent (appearance) of the Lord Krishna. Around this time of the year, millions worldwide celebrate the descent of Lord Krishna, from His spiritual abode to this material world, with lot of grandeur and festivity.

The pleasant evening event was celebrated in an amiable multicultural manner and was highly appreciated by the audience. It had palatable vegetarian food, melodious music, pacific island cultural performances, instructive drama and transcendental choir. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness USP (ISKCON-USP), a USP Chaplaincy Services registered monotheistic nonsectarian spiritual body comprising members of USP staff & students partnered harmoniously with some of the University’s cultural student associations for this successful celebration.

The University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia at the event.

The University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia who attended the event with Mrs Ahluwalia for part of the celebration, stated “the University recognises that as part of its commitment to equality and diversity, it is important that all its community members are treated with equal dignity and respect, which includes respect for religious or other beliefs.

Prof. Ahluwalia also mentioned that he was pleased to note that there were various student associations working cooperatively in the celebration as it resonated well with USP graduate attributes namely appreciation of the cultures of the Pacific Islandsand cross-cultural competencies.

He further encouraged the future event organisers to consider cross-cultural participation as appropriate so that the University would continue to develop appreciation of the cultures of the Pacific Islands.

ISKCON-USP representative, Mr Rohit Deo conveyed his sincere appreciation to all University staff and students who had contributed immensely in many ways for the celebration event. He graciously acknowledged support from the University Chaplaincy Services and audience at the event for providing the opportunity to serve them. ISKCON-USP members indicated that the reason why the celebration event was blissful and greatly appreciated by the University community audience was because it was dovetailed in God consciousness. The successful celebration, in some ways, evidenced that real unity, respect for all and cooperation can be established on a spiritual platform.

The Krishna Janamastami celebration was undertaken with the understanding that (from theistic perspective):

·         God is one without a second and all religions in essence speak about the same personality.

·         The goal of human life should be to develop one's loving relationship with the Supreme Lord

·         The human society has an opportunity for a life of happiness, good health, peace of mind and all good qualities through God consciousness.

The celebration event was dedicated to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada world’s foremost Vedic scholar and teacher, who represents an unbroken chain of fully self-realized spiritual masters beginning from Lord Krishna Himself. His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada provided humanity a veritable library of Vedic philosophy and culture. Highly respected by the academic community for their authoritativeness, depth and clarity, the books of His Divine Grace are used as standard textbooks in numerous Universities. His writings have been translated into over eighty languages.

ISKCON-USP wished the University community a very pleasant Krishna Janamastami 2019.
