Professor Pal Ahluwalia Acknowledges Staff and Students

The Vice- Chancellor and President of The University of the South Pacific, Professor Pal Ahluwalia acknowledged staff, students and principals for 2019 Open Day celebration on 21st August at the Oceania Centre.
 
He expressed his appreciation to all who made the 2019 Open Day a great success on 26th July.
 
“In particular, my appreciation to the Open Day Organising Committee led by Executive Director SPAC, ably assisted by his staff and those from the faculties and sections for a wonderful and successful Open Day,” said Prof. Ahluwalia.
 
He stated that a lot of work goes into organising such a big event like Open Day and he personally visited the villages and booths set up by the faculties and sections. He said these were very well organised with relevant information for prospective students.
 
Prof. Ahluwalia thanked the School Principals and teachers who encouraged their students to visit the Laucala, Lautoka and Labasa campuses, to find out for themselves what the University offers for their tertiary education. 
 
“We at USP look forward to our secondary school heads and teachers to guide students and ensuring that they do well,” he said.
 
“Our staff make a point of visiting every secondary school to advise on the admission requirements and programmes. Our school visits for enrolment for first semester 2020, have commenced and we look forward to your cooperation in ensuring that we do disseminate information that students’ require to enter University.”
 
He was pleased to see that there were some principals and teachers at the celebration.
 
“We would like you to continue to participate in our events in the future. If you feel that your students need to visit USP for information, we will be happy to accommodate it.  We can also visit schools and when requested to talk to students,” he emphasised.
 
Prof. Ahluwalia added that this year a record of 96 schools with around 8000 students visited Laucala Campus,28 schools with 2200 students visited Labasa campus, 25 schools and 1700 students visited Lautoka campus. 
 
He acknowledged the Chief Guest, Minister for Education, Arts and Heritage, Hon Rosy Akbar for giving a wonderful speech on Open Day with messages for prospective students and acknowledging the premier nature of USP. 
 
He thanked the student ambassadors, who played a key role in ably guiding the students.

“Without you, it will be practically impossible to steer so many students on the campus,” added Prof. Ahluwalia.
 
He also acknowledged the contribution and support from the sponsors. “Most of you have been supporting us for many years in our events and I hope you will continue to support us in future.”
 
Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE) was awarded the Special Commendation Awards: Academic Services and Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE) was given the Best Academic Services Display award. 
 
The Special Commendation Awards: Support Services was scooped by Library and Best Support Services Display award went to Information Technology Services(ITS).
 
The Best Student Ambassador Leader was awarded to Jone Gonevou and the Best Student Ambassador went to Elizabeth Grace.
