The University of South Pacific, Tonga Campus
held its Open Day on 30th August with an inspiring theme; “Grow and develop Tonga with Agriculture for a more sustainable livelihood”.
The highlight of this year’s Open day was the Science Fair which involved various experiments and student-centered science activities. The Tonga Campus
Marketing Team aimed to promote the connection between Science and Agriculture and how this connection could help improve livelihood in Tonga.
The Director of the Institute of Education
, who is also Acting Campus Director, Tonga, and Dr. Seu’ula Johansson Fua welcomed the Chief Guest, Mr. Minoru Nishi Jr.
Mr. Nishi Jr is a member of the Tonga Campus
Advisory Committee, Agri-Businessman and longstanding local Entrepreneur.
He delivered a powerful address based on the theme and inspired those present with the notion that the ‘land’ and our ‘natural resources’ will provide Tonga and Tongans with a more holistic and balanced life.
He added that Tongan youths can make a difference through agriculture by thinking simple and having the commitment to utilise their local knowledge to develop themselves in this modern era.
During the Open Day, there were eight high schools present with around two hundred (200) students, escorted by ten (10) school principals and nine (9) teachers. The activities for Open Day were organised for both prospective and current students and it was divided in three parts.
Part one involved the Official ceremony and deliberations by the Guest of Honor and prayer by the Campus Chaplain, Reverend Taniela Tamo’ua. Part two was the Campus tour where invited students were led by some of the staff on a tour around the Tonga Campus
and part three, included displays by the three faculties (FALE, FBE, FSTE), Institute of Education
and Pacific Technical and Further Education
There were booths from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and Nishi Trading and Company a local Agricultural business.
The Tonga Campus
Open Day proved to be a success and preparations are now underway for Open Day events in Ha’apai Centre on the 6th of September to which the Campus Marketing and Communication team will also be present to market and promote the University’s programmes.
