USP Hosts The 16th Pacific Rim International Conference on Artificial Intelligence

Delegates at The 16th Pacific Rim International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (PRICAI 2019).

The 16th Pacific Rim International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (PRICAI 2019) was hosted by University of the South Pacific(USP) with the support from Griffith University (Australia), RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences (Japan), Macquarie University (Australia) and the University of Western Australia from 26-30 August at Shangri-La Hotel.

PRICAI is an International Event which concentrates on theories, technologies and applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the areas of social and economic importance for countries in the Asia Pacific region.

General Co-Chair of PRICAI 2019 and Associate Professor School of Computing Info & Maths, M G M Khan, said that the conference is a prestigious event which attracted nearly 250 delegates from 28 countries this year.

“These included: Scientists, Researchers, Designers and Inventors, Engineers, Professors, Doctors, Lecturers and students alike from over 140 universities and organisations. Further, there are four leading scientists in AI, who presented the Keynote addresses,” he said.

He emphasised that there were more than 160 technical papers presented, out of which, five was from USP.

Prof. Khan said the Vice-Chancellor and President of USP, Professor Pal Ahluwalia was the Chief Guest in the Opening Ceremony and extended welcome to the Keynote speakers and delegates and delivered a great opening address that summarised the importance of AI.

The keynote speakers of the conference were; Prof. Hiroaki Kitano, Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc & The System Biology Institute, Japan; Prof. Grigoris Antoniou, University of Huddersfield, UK; Prof. Mary- Anne Williams, University of Technology Sydney, Australia; and Prof. Byoung- Tak Zhang, Seoul National University, Korea.

He was pleased to inform that it was a great marketing for USP, adding that all the international delegates came to know that USP is the largest Regional University in the world.

“We have huge presence in terms of as hosting institution, sponsor, presence of dignitaries and most importantly, the event was so successful, which was made possible by the members of our local organising committee chaired by Ms. Salsabil Nusair,” said Prof. Khan.

He thanked and congratulated to all the members of the Local Organising Committee.
