University Appoints Director of the Institute of Education

The Vice-Chancellor of The University of the South Pacific, Professor Rajesh Chandra, today announced that the University had appointed Dr Ana Taufe’ulungaki as its Director of the Institute of Education (IOE).

Speaking of the appointment, the Vice-Chancellor says, “USP is very fortunate to attract Dr  Ana Taufe’ulungaki back to the University as Director of IOE. She is one of the leading educationists of our region who will revitalize and re-energize IOE to provide the region with first class research, consultancy and project management. Ana is very familiar both with the USP, having served previously as both Director of IOE and as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), and with the educational requirements of the Ministries of Education and of the region. We all look forward to her coming on board from 4th of January”, he said.

A citizen of Tonga, Dr Ana Taufe’ulungaki has held other senior positions, including that of the Secretary of Education in Tonga, Director of IOE, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), and as consultant to many Pacific island countries. She is known for her commitment to finding long-term solutions to our educational challenges; to quality and relevance of education; to indigenous knowledge and to building the capacity of ministries of education. She served as one of the five commissioners in the Kingdom of Tonga’s Constitutional and Electoral Commission created in 2008 to look at electoral reforms. The Final Report was completed and presented to His Majesty King George Tupou V on 5 November 2009.  

Speaking about her appointment, Dr Taufe’ulungaki said that she was very pleased to be back at USP. “My vision is to develop IOE to become the best and leading institution of excellence in Education in the region, in particular, in all matters relating to Pacific Education. The aim is to assist member states to improve student achievements by focusing on key policies and strategies that will raise students’ outcomes. The purpose is to provide the best and most cost-effective educational service and research to meet the needs of USP’s member states and their communities” said Dr. Taufe’ulungaki.

Dr. Taufe’ulungaki will be based in Tonga, where IOE is now based.
