The University of the South Pacific, the region’s premier learning institution, began the 2010 academic year with the usual weeklong ‘Orientation Week’.
By the end of the week, around 2,000 students had turned up for orientation. The orientation programme this year has been a huge success, and this was the first time that the three faculties themselves hosted orientation for their own new students, on a specific day assigned to each of them.
On Monday 15 February, the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE), conducted orientation for their students, with the Faculty of Arts and Law (FAL), conducting theirs on the following day. The Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE), had their orientation on Wednesday, with the College of Foundation Studies conducting theirs on Thursday 18 February. There are five Support Services in the University of the South Pacific. They include:
• the Student Academic Services (SAS); • the Centre for Flexible and Distance Learning (CFDL); • the USP Library; • Information Technology Services (ITS); and • Campus Life
Each Support Service was also given the opportunity to make presentations during the faculty orientations, on the services they provide at USP. Their facilities were also included in the tour routes.
The new students were happy with the tour routes this year, since the tour for their own faculty, was a thorough one, highlighting all the schools present under their own faculty, as well as other key areas of that particular faculty.
At the end of the week, on Friday 19 February, everyone came together in a festive mood at the ‘Lower Rara’, outside the USP Library, where the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr Esther Williams, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rajesh Chandra, officially welcomed all the new students to USP, and also wished them well on their journey of higher learning.
The official welcome of new students on Friday was also attended by members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from donor agencies, corporate sponsors, USP staff, and other invited guests.
