“There’s always going to be another mountain, I will always want to make it move. There is always going to be an uphill battle, sometimes I’m going to have to lose.  It’s not about how fast I get there, it’s not about what’s waiting on the other side, it’s the climb”  – Cyrus.

She’s a mother, an honoured bread winner, alumnus, an educator, a librarian, an individual who has defied all obstacles to accomplish her dream and she claims that it is her unshakeable faith that has helped boost her career. She thus wishes to share her experience with anyone who hungers for success, irrespective of gender, race or ethnicity.

Violet Penelope Taukave not only achieved her Master of Business Information Technology (MBIT) at one of the most prestigious institutions in Melbourne, she was also nominated as the graduating student with the highest academic performance. This is her story:

“Achieving the ALIA (Australian Library and Information Association) award for 2009 in MBIT – Information Management stream – has been a milestone achievement for me personally and professionally. This award was given by ALIA to RMIT University for students taking the program in the Information Management stream.

I was fortunate to be offered an FAB Scholarship in 2008 when I went for further education at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.  After successfully completing my studies, I returned home to work.

Attending USP and completing the DLIS (Diploma in Library/Information Studies) program provided me with a solid theoretical path for my education as well as my career. Working simultaneously as a librarian helped immensely in putting to practice what was learnt. The work experience coupled with the knowledge gained in the DLIS course contributed significantly to this achievement.  It was not always smooth sailing being a librarian; the job has been challenging and yet very rewarding, especially when user information needs are timely met, contributing to better decisions.

My advice for potential librarians and information providers out there is to start your education somewhere. The certificate or diploma courses offered at USP are recommended as stepping stones for a degree in librarianship. It helps immensely to be working in a library environment as the relevant work experience will be a positive contributing factor to your career”.

Commitment, hardwork, sacrifice, perseverance and prayer were all part of Violet’s recipe for success in life, and having a supportive and understanding family, mentors in the field, and friends, elevated Violet Penelope Taukave to reach the other side, no matter how high or how steep the climb was.
