HOW TO DESIGN AND SET UP AN E-SECURE WEB-BASED SERVICES

Course Commences on 21st August, 2006 (6:00pm - ITS2 Lab, Celt Building)

International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the European Commission (EC) signed the Contribution Agreement for the implementation of the action entitled Capacity Building for Information and Communication Technologies. In the framework of this action, this project aims at setting up Internet Training Centers in Least Developed and Developing Countries in an effort to increase their human resource capacity building in the field of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) and Internet. The How to Design and Set Up an e-Secure Web-based Service course is a part of this project.

This course was sponsored by ITU, designed and developed by National Institute for Information Tehnology Limited (NIIT), headquarters New Delhi, India.The University of the South Pacific, Information Technology Services (IT Services) is privileged to be the first Institution to run such a course in the South Pacific region.

Course Objectives

The interested students will get hands-on experience in implementing web-designs and utilize the advantages of using open source software as indicated as follows:

- Appreciate the business perspective behind Web solutions.
- Implement a Web solution on a Linux platform comprising a three-tier architecture that uses:
1. MySQL for setting up the database.
2. PHP for developing the Web application.
3. Apache for taking the solution online.

- Troubleshoot the critical and most common problems that occur during the implementation.
- Monitor the implementation and tune its performance.
- Secure the implementation.

Duration: 6 weeks

Course Overview:

This course aims to make you “ready-to-deploy” as soon as you come out of the training. To achieve this, the course is a blend of Instructor Led & Web Based Training (WBT) [43 hours] and lab sessions [98.5 hours] that places you in a real-life situation and asks you to develop a Web solution to tackle the situation.

This course is also aimed at Information Technology graduating students either from University or other Technical Institutes in order to gain experiences and knowledge of using the relevant open source software’s. In doing so, it is an excellent platform for students who wish to gain profession in web-designing as well.

Candidates from other organizations who wish to establish web-design or are in the process of initiating e-Commerce will find this course relevant to obtain such goals to their benefit as well.

Overall, in General it is a stepping-stone for IT beginners to gain leverage in profession in the Information Technology Industry.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

- Prior knowledge of basic Linux is essential.
- Apache, MySQL and PHP will be an advantage.
- Minimum knowledge of Networking.

- Create simple HTML programs.
- Work with computers.
- Browse the Internet.

Course Content:

All the content required to solve the situation is taught through the WBTs and an online bookstore is developed during the lab sessions. By the time you complete the training, you would create your own online bookstore and in the process gain immensely from the experiences you have and the mistakes you make.

- Fedora Linux Core 3
- MySQL 3.23.58
- Apache 2.0
- PHP 4.3.3
