  Seminar By Ms Elizabeth Fong
(USP Web Events)

The University of the South Pacific
Faculty of Arts, Law & Education

Invites you to a Seminar jointly organized by FALE/AUSPS/FAWG on "Reaching the Top of the Coconut Tree: Challenges, Progress and Sustainability for Women in Academia and Support Services at the University of the South Pacific (USP)" By Ms Elizabeth Fong, Deputy University Librarian

Abstract
The University of the South Pacific (USP) is one of two regional universities in the world and is owned by twelve Pacific governments. Staff are recruited internationally with capacity building programs in place for regional and international staff. A general consciousness of the need for gender balance has underpinned university recruitment and management but the application and sustainability of this consciousness has had a checkered history. There have been successes, but challenges remain. The paper discusses this checkered history and volunteers solutions for consideration by the University that were recommended by women academic and support staff who were part of a survey conducted by the author. To bring the glass ceiling closer to home the author likens it to reaching the top of the coconut tree.
