July 8-12, 2013
As we approach the 2015 deadline for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and work to develop an architecture for sustainable development post Rio+20, women’s roles in achieving human security are more critical than ever. In addition to human rights and equity concerns, gender equality and women’s participation serve as catalysts for environmental, economic and social progress. Furthermore, with respect to science and human security, it is imperative that we bring all of our human resources to bear on the critical challenges for the 21st century and seek to achieve an inclusive, people centered, sustainable Pacific development agenda. The PSA and its taskforce on Human Dimensions for the Future have a strong commitment to the engagement of women and other underrepresented and vulnerable groups in science in the Asia Pacific region. Papers are invited on a wide range of topics relating to gender and human security, women, science and development, the interconnections between gender equality and sustainable development, the contribution of women’s knowledge from indigenous knowledge to new information and communication technologies, and topics relevant to gender equality as both a core human right and development goal for the Pacific region.
The symposium is organized as part of the Culture and Gender Theme, 12th Pacific Science Inter-Congress.
