USP Years:
As a student, I have always been passionate about accounting and its critical role in business operations. I envisioned myself working for a reputable accounting firm, conducting audits, and ensuring organizations adhered to financial regulations and standards.
The University of the South Pacific made this dream a reality when I enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Accounting and Banking Finance. During my studies, I faced many challenges. Being far from family and friends was difficult, but with God’s protection and guidance, I overcame them all. I am incredibly grateful for the invaluable support of my family, especially my mom and dad. They pushed me through tough times when I wanted to give up. Without their love and support, I wouldn’t have come this far. I dedicate all my success and courage to my beautiful mother who passed away and hope she continues to guide me.
Career Path:
After graduating, my first job was as a compliance officer at the Tax Office – ACU: Audit Compliance Unit (MFED). This role was a significant learning experience where I developed a keen eye for detail, upheld high ethical standards, and learned to work efficiently under the pressure of audit seasons. The hands-on experience in performing audits and advising clients was invaluable, building a strong foundation for my future career.
A pivotal moment came in December 2022 when I was offered a three-month temporary position as an Auditor at the Kiribati Audit Office. This role perfectly combined my passion for accounting with my interest in organizational operations. I evaluated the effectiveness of internal controls, ensured compliance with regulatory requirements, and provided recommendations for process improvements. This opportunity not only confirmed my career aspirations but also allowed me to make a tangible impact on the organization’s financial practices.
The Future:
Currently, my goals include continuing to advance in the field of auditing. I am particularly interested in exploring how technology, such as data analytics and artificial intelligence, can improve audit processes. I believe these technologies can revolutionize auditing by enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and fraud detection.
Looking ahead, I see my field becoming even more integral to business operations. As regulatory requirements tighten and organizations seek greater transparency, the demand for skilled auditors will increase. I aim to stay at the forefront of these developments, contributing to cutting-edge research and implementation.
Being an alumnus of USP means a great deal to me. It signifies a connection to an institution that shaped my career and personal growth. The values and experiences I gained at USP continue to influence my professional journey and drive my commitment to making a positive impact in accounting and auditing.
