Groups and Workshops
Groups
Therapeutic Groups are run as counselling in a group setting, and meet regularly (weekly or monthly). Attendees get to know other group members and can benefit from support and understanding from other participants, as well as hearing different perspectives.
Facilitators will offer information and exercises to enable this process and guide the group to help you get what you need. Facilitators are also there to help establish and maintain agreements on how the group will run. Useful coping strategies often come from attending a group, but this is usually achieved through a deepening understanding of yourself through contact with, and feedback from others, which informs what strategies might work best for you.
To enrol in a group, you will need to have an individual appointment first and talk to the Counsellor about therapeutic groups that may have sessions running at your time of contact with us.
Workshops
Workshops are often one-off events (sometimes they are made up of 2 linked sessions) with a specific theme, such as adjusting university life, exam anxiety or alcohol and drug use. Workshop may be arranged by request from sections, schools and campuses within USP. These can be tailored to needs of the requesting department. The sessions will have input from the counsellor running it, as well as reflective exercises to allow discussion and sharing of experiences from students or members of staff attending. They are often focused on finding practical ways of managing specific issues. A calendar of workshop events will be available at the Counselling Centre notice board, Counselling Centre and Campus Life Social media pages.
