Learn Chinese at Confucius Institute at USP

The Confucius Institute at USP is offering various levels of Chinese courses at USP in 2020 and will meet different demands from individuals, businesses, schools, government departments, and NGOs. Different levels of credit course (CN101/CN201/CN301/CN302) and social courses are here for your selection. The credit courses will focus not only on the conversational skills of Chinese but also on linguistic structure and Chinese character writing. The social courses will improve your social communication skills in Chinese, especially in listening and speaking. It includes the pronunciation and the most practical communication tasks needed in daily life. We also provide distinctive cultural workshops for students, such as Tea Ceremony, Chinese Calligraphy, and Chinese dancing during the semester.

Expected results

  1. Students can choose to take an internationally recognized Chinese proficiency test (HSK).
  2. Excellent students will be nominated for the Chinese Bridge Competition in China.
  3. Students can get a Minor of Chinese Language after completing all the credit courses.
  4. A certificate indicating language levels of Chinese will be issued upon your successful completion of the social class courses.
  5. Students can apply for the CI headquarters scholarship to study in China after passing internationally recognized Chinese proficiency test (HSK).

In-house Training Course for Hotels and Companies

We can offer in-house Chinese Language training for Fijian companies which have business connection with Chinese companies. The programme aims to introduce the learners to Chinese language, culture and some customs, helping them solve the problems that may occur during communications. It will not only introduce learners to basic Chinese conversations and culture but also improve listening and speaking skills in the Chinese language in work scenarios.By the end of this programme, the learners will be able to:

  • Improve Chinese listening and speaking skills, especially in work scenarios.
  • Have a better understanding of Chinese culture and customs.
  • Enhance ability to provide more professional service to Chinese clients.

About one-fifth of the world population or over 1.5 billion people around the world speak Chinese language (Mandarin). If you want to open a door to the profound culture and history of China, to run a business with the fast developing country, or to travel, study or work in such a charming place, here is your opportunity. A nonprofit organization, the Confucius Institute at USP has been established between The University of the South Pacific and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.
Beginner’s course for USP Laucala Campus staff will starts from 3 December 2019, which focuses on basic daily social communication skills of Chinese Language - listening and speaking. It starts with Chinese pronunciation, and includes the most practical communication tasks needed to meet the basic requirements of daily life in China.

In the Beginner’s course, students will learn:

  • Chinese Phonetics of  Pinyin;
  • How to greet each other and introduce yourself in Chinese;
  • Numbers and time;
  • Introduce family members.

Emalus campus

Various Levels of Chinese Language Courses in USP Emalus Campus

As a nonprofit organization, the Confucius Classroom at Campus USP Emalus (CC-USP) was established in 2014. It has completed eleven sessions of social courses and seven sessions of credit courses. Thirty nine students have been sent to visit China. After more than 5 years of fast development, CCUSP at Emalus Campus is now offering more courses. We welcome you to learn Chinese with this professional Chinese language teaching organization. We will respond to different demands from businesses, schools, government departments and NGOs. If you want to open a door to Chinese culture and history, to run a business with the world’s second largest economy, or to travel, study or work in China, HERE IS YOUR CHANCE! In-house training for a specific purpose can be negotiated with us. Distinctive cultural workshops will be organized during the semester. Registration for semester 1 of 2020 is now open. 

Courses:

USP Credit Course (CN101, CN201, CN301, CN302)

Two 2-hour class sessions plus one 1-hour tutorial. 5 hours per week. For CN 101 and CN201 we offer both online courses and face to face courses. Refer to the USP Calendar 2020 for the course details and fee schedule.

We offer the Chinese Ambassador’s Scholarship to support qualified USP students for Chinese Credit Courses.  To win the Ambassador’s Scholarship, please fill out the Application Form and return the form before 6th February to SASS Office. The form can be obtained from SASS office, Confucius Classroom office, and on the Face Book home page of Confucius Classroom of USP Emalus Campus. The application form is only for the Ambassador’s Scholarship, you still need to register for the Chinese course as you do for other USP credit courses.

Chinese Courses for Social Students

Start from 17 Feb 2020 - 15 weeks. Two hours per week. ≤ 15 students.  VT 11,200.

Teaching Content:

  1. To learn Chinese daily conversation, grammar, characters, in order to better communicate with Chinese;
  2. To experience and understand rich Chinese culture, such as tea culture and food culture, etc.To learn Chinese daily conversation, grammar, characters, in order to better communicate with Chinese;

Expected Results:

  1. A certificate indicating language levels of Chinese will be issued upon completion of the course.
  2. Students can choose to attend an internationally recognized Chinese language proficiency test (HSK). Please consult CC for detailed information.
  3. Excellent students will be recommended for excursions to China or Chinese scholarships. A certificate indicating language levels of Chinese will be issued upon completion of the course.
