——the Chinese New Year cultural experience activities of Confucius Institute at Suva Library
February 3, 2017, the sixth day of the first lunar month, Confucius Institute of USP (below referred to as CI-USP) and Fiji Suva Library co-hosted a Chinese Lunar New Year cultural experience activitiy. There were around 40 primary students from different schools attended this activity.
At the beginning of the activity, teacher from CI-USP taught the children how to say a few festival terms such as “Happy New Year”, “Hello”, ”Thank You”, and “Good-bye.” Two short videos introducing Chinese New Year were played, and children watched them energetically and enthusiastically. After the videos the children were asked questions, and each child was itching to answer questions and receive a gift. In the second part of the activity, children showcased their creativity and talent in drawing chicks and chickens, and were taught to sing the Chinese “ Happy New Year” song. The children learnt and performed the song so well, and two kids even came up to the stage to bravely sing the Happy New year song in both English and Chinese.
At the end of the event, CI-USP staff took a group picture with all the children in front of the background which was elaborately decorated by Suva Library staff. Everyone shouted out “Happy New Year” in Chinese, all the children received a little new year gift and the event ended successfully.
