Usman Ali

Usman Ali is one of the first graduates of USP. He graduated with a Diploma in Education in 1971. After graduation he took up his first teaching post at Ratu Navula High School in Nadi.  After that he returned to Suva and joined the Suva City Council as a Town Planning Assistant. At Suva City Council, he was offered a paid scholarship to study for an Honours Degree in Urban Planning at the University of Newcastle in UK. He successfully completed his studies and was admitted to become the holder of the title of Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI), a first for a Fiji Citizen.

After completing his further studies in UK, he returned to Fiji in 1980 and was subsequently appointed as the Chief Planner for the City of Suva. Usman also taught courses at USP from 1982-1988 in Town and Country Planning as part of Land Management programme. In 1988, he left to take up an appointment in New Zealand where he currently resides.

Career-wise, Usman continued with his studies to gain post graduate qualifications in Environmental Economics and Environmental Law. He continued his career as a lawyer and spent 4 years practising in Australia as well.
