USP Open Day 2013 Message from Professor Rajesh Chandra, Vice-Chancellor and President

Open Day 2013, which  promises to be a more exciting and informative event than ever before, will showcase what USP can offer to all those considering joining its dynamic, multicultural intellectual community.

USP Open Day 2013 is open to everyone who is considering university education. Whichever campus you are visiting today, you are promised the opportunity to explore the facilities and surroundings, to speak with academic and administrative staff, to meet students and researchers, and to ask any questions you might have.

The day has been designed to give you a sense of the many opportunities that are available at USP- the regionís premier university and to allow you to explore and understand the benefit from them.

Fun and games aside, Open Day is about a very important choice.  Your choice of university will shape the rest of your life.  It is often said that the university years are the best years of oneís life, and, in many ways, that is very true.  It is important to have friends who are as ambitious as you are, to have lecturers and professors with high expectations of your performance, and to have supportive academic mentors and administrative staff who want to see you succeed and achieve.

USP, with years of experience in offering high-quality academic programmes, in using ICT for education, and in providing comprehensive student support, is well-placed to provide the solid academic foundation needed for lifelong success.

Most prospective students, both young and mature, consider whether or not their choice of programme and choice of university will help them secure a good job.  You can be confident that USP is a recognized university that is a major player in the region and well-known internationally.  USP alumni have gained places in many postgraduate programmes in Australia, New Zealand, and further afield and likewise have been employed internationally.  There is a valuable alumni network, which is resource for both students and its alumni members.

I always encourage students to devote the majority of their time to studies and research, but also to ensure that they enjoy the many extracurricular activities that USP offers.   Leisure and social activities are part of the university experience, and many USP students take part in debates, belong to special interest groups, and contribute to surrounding communities through voluntary work.

USP is a good, established and reputable university on a path to excellence by its 50th anniversary in 2018.  I invite you to travel down that path with us.  Open Day 2013 demonstrates many of USPís points of distinction, including first-class ICT facilities, an excellent record of research, highly commended teaching practices, and a strong Pacific focus.  With multitude of academic programmes in diverse areas, there is something for everyone at USP.  Accessibility is notably a major focus of USPís growth and development, and USP aims to ensure that everyone can access its programmes and enjoy an equal chance of success.

There is a palpable sense of excitement about the future at USPís campuses.  Although USP already has some of the best learning facilities in the region, many of the campuses are being upgraded; in some cases, the campuses are being enlarged, modernised, or even rebuilt in anticipation of growth in demand for higher education.  In addition, more and more programmes are gaining international accreditation, and faculty continue to build on international linkages and engage in joint research.  We invite you to be part of USPís growth.

I hope that your USP Open Day experience is helpful as you go about making an extremely important decision as to your university destination, and trust that you will find answers to most of your questions.  Do keep in contact with us after the event, as admissions staff will be pleased to assist with your application, or direct you to the relevant Faculty.

Come and visit us at your nearest USP campus. There is so much to discover at USP Open Day 2013 for your tertiary education requirements.
