Conference Venue

The conference will be held at the Postgraduate Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE), Laucala Campus, The University of the South Pacific (USP), located on Laucala Bay Road, Suva, Fiji Islands.  Suva is situated on the southeast coast of the island of Viti Levu, which is the largest island in Fiji.

Fiji Currency

The Fiji currency, known as the Fijian Dollar, is commonly depicted by the code FJD or FJ$.  This is the currency that is acceptable for transactions within Fiji.  Currency exchange facilities are available at the Nadi International Airport and trading banks.  Traveller’s cheques can be changed at banks.  Credit cards are accepted by a number of large establishments such as hotels and large supermarkets.  We also have banks at USP that can change your funds to Fijian dollars.

Conference Accommodation

There are numerous hotels in and near Suva City, ranging from 4 star to budget.  Details will be made available shortly.

Conference participants will be responsible for making their own accommodation bookings directly with the hotels of their choice.

The University of the South Pacific Campus Rooms

A small number of rooms may be available to conference participants at the USP’s Lodge, Suva.  Availability of campus rooms will depend on occupancy status at the time of the conference.

Travel Arrangement

Nadi Airport caters for all international flights in Fiji. Nadi Airport is located in Nadi, on the western side of Viti Levu.  Information on flight packages to Fiji can be obtained directly from the airlines.  The website addresses for the international airlines are:

Transport Options from Nadi Airport to Suva

The distance from Nadi Airport to Suva is approximately 200km.  You can travel by plane, public bus, taxi, tourist coach or rental car.  Pacific Link is the only domestic airline that flies from Nadi Airport to Nausori Airport and return; the flight takes approximately 30 minutes.  It takes another 30 minutes to travel from the Nausori Airport to Suva - taxifare is FJ$25.

Public buses and tourist coaches takes about 4 to 7 hours from Nadi to Suva whereas rental cars and taxis takes about 3.5 hours to reach Suva.  For safety and convenience, it is advisable that you travel between Nadi and Suva during the day.

Travelling Within Suva

Public buses and taxis can generally be used for travelling within Suva.  Taxis wait at taxi stands or can be flagged down.  Taxis can also be hired.  It takes about 10 minutes with a fare of approximately FJ$5.00 to go from Suva City to the USP by taxi.  A bus ride from the Suva Bus Station to USP will take about 15 minutes with a fare of approximately FJ$0.70.  Bus and taxi fares increase with the distance travelled.  At USP during the conference, if you need a cab, ask our secretary for assistance.


Fiji has a tropical maritime climate with sea breezes maintaining minimal daytime variations in temperature.  During the dry winter months of May to November, fine warm or cool days are expected.  In the wetter summer months of December to April, the humidity is higher and nights and days are warmer.  The interiors of the main islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu experience cooler night-time temperatures.  During the summer months, maximum temperatures average about 31ºC.  For the winter months, the maximum temperature averages about 28ºC.  Temperatures in Suva during late November to early December generally range from an average of about 25ºC at night to an average of 30ºC in the daytime.

About Suva City

The city of Suva sits on a hilly peninsula between Laucala Bay and Suva Harbour on the south-eastern side of Viti Levu.  Suva is Fiji’s capital city.  It is the major commercial and political centre of Fiji, and the largest urban area in the South Pacific outside of Australia and New Zealand.  Suva is mostly surrounded by sea.  As the capital, Suva has a Parliament House and many overseas embassies.  Suva is home to a variety of South Pacific educational institutions including the USP, the Fiji School of Medicine, the Fiji National University and the Institute of Technology Australia.  This vibrant multi-cultural capital has a population of about 200,000, and a large selection of shops and restaurants.  The main tourist attractions in Suva includes:

Supermarkets, clothing shops, drapery shops, handicraft shops, shopping malls and pharmacies are accessible in Suva City.  The country’s largest fresh food market is located right next to the Suva Bus Station.  The Suva Flea Market, located opposite the Suva Bus Station, also has cheap goods on offer.  Shopping facilities are available in major hotels within the Suva area mostly on a 24 hour basis.  Although many hotels and resorts have shopping on site, Suva city is a popular shopping destination, especially the Victoria Parade area.  Marks Street and Cumming Street are the centre of town and feature small, independent traders.  Groceries, jewellery, clothes, handicrafts, artifacts, souvenir items, and original artworks are among the many items on offer in the city.  Shopping hours are generally from 9.00am to 5.00pm.  Some shopping centres, such as MHCC located in central Suva City and Cost-U-Less situated opposite the University of the South Pacific, remain open until 8.00pm or 9.00pm.  Supermarkets and shops within the Suva city open up to about 1.00pm on Saturdays.  On Sundays, shops are generally closed except for some grocery shops and a few shopping malls such as MHCC and Tappoo City.  Sports City and Damodar City, close to USP is open from Sunday to Sunday at 9am to 9pm.


Fiji is well known for Fijian traditional food and its delicacy.  There are many restaurants including Indian and Chinese restaurants to choose from in the Suva City.  Restaurants cater for all tastes and budgets.  These include Tiko’s Floating restaurant which specializes in seafood, Bad Dog Café which serves Fijian, European, Indian and Asian food, and JJ’s Restaurant which features seafood and Fijian dishes.  Some restaurants are also located in and around USP.  Meal costs range from FJ$5.00 to FJ$20.00 per person.
