October Council Update 12th November 2014 - Association of The University of the South Pacific
Please note below council update:
Review Report on the USP Charter, Statutes, Council Membership, Nominations and Voting Rights
The Council accepted the report on the above from the Consultants. However, due to time constraints and the many recommendations made, with respect to each of the above, the Council decided to deal with these in the May 2015 Council Meeting which will be held in Kiribati. In particular, AUSPS is concerned with Council Membership, Nominations and Voting Rights. In the current arrangement, four staff members are represented in the Council, two staff members are elected and two professors appointed by the University Senate. Also, under the present arrangement each staff member has the right to nominate and vote. Several recommendations are made in the report in relation to Membership, Nominations and Voting Rights and AUSPS stand is to continue with the current practice as it has served the entire University community well for over four decades.
The Council was updated by the VC on the review of Teaching Assistant positions. The VC mentioned about the ongoing discussions with AUSPS on the matter. The Staff Representative informed the Council about the need for best terms and conditions for all staff and they must be well aligned to the labour practices advocated by international organisations such as ILO and UNESCO. AUSPS will continue with its work on the matter so that the Teaching Assistants are given due recognition to their contribution to the University.
