The 2015 Pacific ICT Days, with the theme of “ICTs: Drivers of Innovation”, were held in Port Vila on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16 at the Warwick Le Lagon conference centre. Several Emalus campus departments contributed to this year’s proceedings by setting up booth to demonstrate how USP uses ICTs to support students in their learning goals. This is the second year that USP has been asked to partner with the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer for the two-day event.

Four computer terminals in the Emalus campus booth demonstrated different aspects of teaching and learning at USP. One terminal offered a presentation on Moodle and how USP students use this software to manage their coursework and submit their assignments. Another terminal connected to USP’s REACT system, showing how students from around the Pacific participate in lectures and tutorials without leaving their home islands. A third terminal presented video demonstrations on how to use the collections on PacLII and subscribed databases via the Emalus library website. The fourth terminal used an interactive CD-ROM to teach users aspects of Pacific history, including audio, video, and text. A set of short questions next to terminal let users test themselves on what they learned. Those who answered the questions correctly selected from a variety of prizes.

A lengthier quiz was offered to everyone coming to the Emalus campus booth. Winners were drawn from those who answered all questions correctly; they received USP T-shirts as prizes.

Representatives from ITS, PacLII, SASS, and library answered visitors’ questions and encouraged them to participate in the demonstrations. Secondary school students were particularly encouraged to take brochures relating to USP’s academic programs and to ask any questions they might have.
