Graduate Assistant Scholarship Traditional Ecological Knowledge

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a Graduate Scholarship to undertake a Master degree by research at the University of the South Pacific (USP), starting in Semester 1, 2017. The opportunity is offered within the project "Traditional Ecological Knowledge effects on sustainable use of marine resources in the Pacific Islands at time of sociocultural change and climate change - a pilot study in Fiji". Project leader is Susanna Piovano (USP School of Marine Studies). Team members are Dr John Lowry (SGESE), Dr Jacqueline Ryle (SOSS) and Dr Joeli Veitayahi (SMS)

The project 

Project abstract is available at the Research Office website. The recipient of the scholarship will be involved in one or more of the following aspects: 


  • Ethnographic research
  • Mapping through participatory GIS
  • Evaluation of status of marine resources

Benefits and Conditions

The Graduate Scholarship will comprise the following:


  • Tuition fees (paid directly)
  • Book allowance (of up to $750/year)
  • General Services fee (paid directly)
  • Health Services fee (paid directly)
  • Living allowance of $12,600 per year to be paid on a monthly basis (for 3 Semesters)
  • Research grant - only after the research plan and budget have been approved by the appropriate Faculty Research Committee

Scholarship conditions

Scholarship is for three semester starting from Semester 1, 2017. The scholarship is for full-time study only. Awardee is not permitted to be in paid employment during the tenure of the awards and will be required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week for the entire year on the research. Scholarship holder will also be expected to contribute to ongoing teaching at FSTE for a maximum of eight hours per week during semester time. 

Eligibility and selection criteria


  • Applicants must have completed a Post Graduate study in a discipline relevant to the project (e.g. Marine Science or Marine Management, Geography or Environmental Science).
  • Applicants must be citizens of a USP member country
  • Applicants must have an undergraduate GPA and postgraduate diploma GPA of at least 3.0
  • Being a strong swimmer and fluent in Fijian are desirable.
