First-Aid & Fire Warden Training for Labasa Campus Staffs

USP campus staffs at Labasa and Savusavu center were blessed to be part of an intensive three days training that up-skilled campus staff on life skills and quick response mechanism in times of emergencies and safety practices.

Staff members took part in the inaugural First-Aid/CPR and Fire Warden training. The training was held from the 12th to 13th and 21st of June respectively. This included assessment, evaluation and practicals which participants successfully completed and are now trained first aiders and fire wardens. The training was facilitated by Mr. Arthur Simmons from Red Cross and Mr. Praneel Naidu from the National Fire Authority. Both the training's were fully funded by the regional office at USP-Laucala campus.

Staff lamented their changed perspective on how important it was to correctly administer first aid or fire wardens procedures and practices in any given emergency situation. They also realized the importance of the seriousness of bearing upon themselves the task of being a first aider or a fire warden. Thus, in any future disaster or emergency there is assurance that the campus staff will practice what they have learned and are also more vigilant and pro-safety conscious while being on campus around the students.

For a campus like Labasa and Savusavu center, OHS compliance is paramount thus the organized training of this nature. It will greatly boost the confidence of the staff in handling emergency situations and also the university will not be in lieu of not being OHS compliant. It is a strategy of decreasing disaster risks and ensuring safety allowing the university to be a conducive work and study environment. This is also fulfilling priority area 6 of the USP's strategic plan 2013-2018 in developing staff and enhancing their skills.

Appreciation is kindly accorded to all those who have supported and made this training possible.
