USP Lautoka Conducts Information Session for its Part-time Staff

The USP Lautoka Campus held an information session on Thursday, 14th September for its part-time staff to make them better aware of the facilities, support services and other relevant information about the Campus.

Held at the Campus lecture room, the one-hour session was attended by 11 part-time staff including staff from USP’s Pacific TAFE, Continuing and Community Education (CCE) and also one Faculty staff.

In her welcome address USP Lautoka Campus Director Dr. Pramila Devi impressed on the significance of such session and thanked the staff for attending.  She said it was important for the part-timers to know the key aspects of the Campus such as its services particularly the various support features/services it offered for its students and staff and the point of contact for each issue.

The session was based on power-point presentation conducted by the Campus’ Student Officers Devika Ram and Arti Archana, Rajiv Goundar from IT and CCE Coordinator West Rajendra Singh. Duration of each presentation was approximately five minutes.

Ms. Archana’s presentation was based on the Registration process, Student Academic Services matters and student fees. She briefed the part-time staff on some important procedures such as room booking, class cancellation notification, exam supervision request, fees deadline penalty which students should be reminded about.   Ms. Archana told the staff to always check their class-list to ensure all students registered matched with the students actually attending the class and discussed some other important issues.

Second presenter, Ms. Ram elaborated on the Student Learning Support (SLS) available at USP Lautoka to assist students seeking help.  The staff were told that the Academic and Study Skills Workshop was held at 11am – 1pm from Monday to Friday in the SLS Room aimed at helping students develop key study skills and promote independent learning and ultimately help improve their academic performance.  Ms. Ram said this workshop would also assist students with their successful transition at the university and broaden and deepen their understanding of subjects.

In her presentation Ms. Ram mentioned that students could sign up for the Senior Peer Mentoring services available at the Campus to tackle difficulties with their courses, assignments and exam preparation/revision.

Ms. Ram also enlightened the staff on USP Lautoka’s Library whereby important information and matters such as the library policies, services and its usage were discussed.

Mr. Goundar spoke about the various IT support services and issues and also presented on the features and usage of Moodle for learning.  He said the staff should have these basic knowledge of IT so they could be of some assistance to students if urgent need arises in the absence of IT personnel.

The session concluded with Mr. Singh’s presentation on CCE.   Mr. Singh told the part-time staff that they needed to be aware of the important information about USP and the Lautoka Campus so they can be prepared to guide any students or answer their questions even though it may not concern their department.

He said the staff should also know what CCE is about and have a fair idea of the courses it offers. “Most learning occurs on the job and not through formal education, thus the need for Continuing Education;” he said.
