Swami Vivekananda College Wins USP’s Essay Competition

It was a proud moment for year 12 student of Swami Vivekananda College, Vanessa Mitchell, as she was awarded first prize winner of USP’s Essay Writing Competition in category two, having competed with students from schools around the region.

The 17 year old scholar was awarded an Acer laptop and velocity package while her school received FJD2000.  The presentation was done by USP Lautoka Campus’ Accountant Arunesh Chandra and Student Learning Specialist, Siniveva Laupepa at the school’s Annual Awards Day event in Nadi on Thursday, 23rd November, 2017.

Mitchell, who is originally from Vanualevu said she was thrilled yet surprised with her first-place win as she said a lot of her fellow students participated and worked hard for this competition.

She specially acknowledged her father, John Ross, and her younger siblings who are year 9, 10 and 11 scholars in the same school, for helping her with the compilation of the essay.

“I spent a week to write up the essay and it was a quite interesting experience for me, being a first timer,” Mitchell said.  “My dad was a great motivator, coming from a Journalism background, and I am thankful to him for his encouragement and guidance.”

The competition was organised by USP during its Open Day, in light of the university’s 50th Anniversary in 2018 and secondary schools within USP member countries in the Pacific region were invited to participate.

The essay topic was “How USP contributes to the sustainable development of the Pacific region with examples and how you see USP shaping the future of youths in the region”.
The competition was divided into two categories and Mitchell contested the second category which had a 2000-2500 words criteria.
Mitchell’s essay focused on how Fiji’s citizens could work together to help reduce pollution and address other issues faced by the nation.
