Nadi Muslim College Student receives award from USP

Kelemedi Gukirewa, a year 11 student of Nadi Muslim College was awarded $1,000.00 cheque from USP for being the first runner up in an essay competition at a regional level.

USP Lautoka Campus Director Dr. Pramila Devi made the presentation on behalf of the university at the school’s annual awards function in Nadi on Wednesday, November 22, 2017.
The competition was organised by USP during its Open Day and secondary schools in all of USP’s member countries in the Pacific region were invited to participate.

This was the first competition the 16 year old scholar participated in and according to him he is now confident and motivated to participate in more such competitions in the future.

The very humble and soft spoken teenager who hails from Kadavu, acknowledged the support of his English teacher, Mrs. Sandesh Singh.  “I also thank my two sisters for reading and editing the essay for me,” he said.
“This competition has boosted my confidence and I hope to compete again if I am given another opportunity in the future,” he said.

The essay topic was “How USP contributes to the sustainable development of the Pacific region with examples and how you see USP shaping the future of youths in the region”.

Gukirewa’s essay was depicted on a girl from a small island in Fiji who attended USP where she learned about renewable energy and USP’s role in sustainable development.

The competition consisted of two categories and Gukirewa contested the first one which was for Year 10 and Year 11 students, who were required to submit an essay between 1000-1500 words.  The second category, which was for Year 12 and 13 students, had 2000-2500 words requirement.
Mrs. Singh said she was happy and proud of Gukirewa’s achievement, stating her appreciation for his efforts and dedication, especially since it was a challenge for her to get students to write.
