  • Ladies and Gentlemen.

I wish to humbly thank you, Your Excellency Acting President Adeang, for your kind words of inspiration and encouragement to all the Council members, and for officially declaring the 86th USP Council meeting open. This is indeed a historic meeting as it is the first time that the Council is meeting in Nauru, and even more special because it is being held during Nauru and USP’s 50th anniversary year.

As we deliberate on major decisions of the University over the two days we will ensure that the focus on quality education, and our commitment to USP regional campuses, including the Nauru Campus, is maintained and enhanced.

On this note, I also wish to thank the President of Nauru His Excellency Baron Divavesi Waqa and the people and Government of Nauru for hosting the 86th Council meeting and for the very generous hospitality and warmth accorded to us from the time of our arrival. I take this opportunity, on behalf of the USP Council and the University Community, to congratulate the Government and the people of Nauru on your 50th Anniversary year. It is an honor and privilege for USP to be celebrating our own golden jubilee alongside yours and signifies the strong link and partnership that Nauru has with USP.

The Government and people of Nauru have demonstrated their confidence and faith in the ability of the University to provide higher education and research needs of Nauru through their investment in the new Nauru Campus. The University is most grateful for this new Campus.

I wish to assure you, Your Excellency and the people of Nauru of the University’s commitment to providing a wider range of programmes to your youths and to do more research on Nauru.

Our focus on international accreditation as a way of ensuring excellence will continue in the new Strategic Plan that the Council will deliberate on because it is this excellence, relevance, and embeddedness in our countries that will provide long-term sustainability for USP. Nauru may be far from Laucala and other campuses—but with the latest ICT infrastructure, it is only a click away. With our lecture capture system, all courses offered at Laucala, Emalus and Alafua are within reach of Nauruan students in Nauru—and the new campus will facilitate this greatly.

I would also like to sincerely thank the Nauru Campus Director, Alamanda Lauti and her staff for their hardwork, dedication and support in ensuring that the new Campus is ready and setup in time for the meeting to be hosted here. I also thank the various staff members who have travelled from the Laucala Campus to make arrangements for this two day meeting.

Last but not the least, I would like to thank all the Council members for your continued support and look forward to your important feedback and discussions of the items on the 86th Council meeting agenda for the betterment of education in the Pacific region.

Tubwa Kor, Vinaka and Thank You.
