The USP Lautoka Campus hopes to further its ties with the corporate sector around the Western Division to thoroughly enhance productivity and qualification level of employees in this sector.

At the Corporate Sector Seminar held at USP Lautoka on July 12, it was heard that the corporate sector played a very vital role in the economic development and growth of the nation, hence the need for well trained and qualified individuals who would bring high level of quality and productivity together with efficiency for the success of their organization and the nation as well.

USP Lautoka Campus Director Dr. Pramila Devi pointed out that the seminar, held as part of USP’s 50th anniversary celebrations at the Campus, was an opportune time for the various corporate organizations to properly learn what all courses and programmes the Lautoka campus offers to benefit the workforce.

She said that what initiated as the Fiji Centre for USP in Lautoka in 1995 then transformed into the Lautoka Campus in 2001 was today one of the best tertiary education provider in the Western Division.

“We started with a small number of students in this building with only one and half floor but now we are occupying three and half floors of the entire building.
“Our student number has grown steadily and significantly from 2010 and in the last six years there has been an average growth of 15 percent. On the same note our staff number has grown and the range of programmes has also grown and the latest inclusion of Pacific TAFE programs has also become very popular.”
“The university is also eager to learn from our corporate bodies on areas where there is a gap in the community which we should seriously look into,” Dr Devi emphasized.

Guest speaker at the seminar Fiji Sugar Corporation’s General Manager Information Systems Ms Rajneesh Charan reminded the participants that they should always look at upgrading their qualifications and never feel that they are too qualified.

She stressed that employers should also always encourage their staff members to continuously upgrade their qualifications.
