Vote of Thanks by Professor Rajesh Chandra on Visit by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the 24 October 2018, Japan ICT Centre, Laucala Campus

The staff and students of the University are deeply honoured and humbled by the visit of Your Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, to the University.

This visit is indeed historic, as this is the 50th Anniversary year of the University. I wish to humbly thank the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for this visit and hope that you will have the opportunity to visit us again in the future.

I wish to thank the British High Commission, in particular, Her Excellency, Melanie Hopkins, the British High Commissioner to Fiji, and her staff for their advice and support in preparation for this visit.

Special thanks also to the Fijian Government for making USP part of this Royal visit.

I thank Mr. Ioane Naivalurua, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs and his team for their leadership and guidance to USP Taskforce for all the arrangements today. I thank USP Taskforce led by Jaindra Karan, Executive Director, Strategic Partnerships, Advancement and Communications and his team for the excellent arrangements.

I hope, Your Royal Highnesses, that you have enjoyed the cultural performance by our very talented and world renowned Pasifika Voices and Oceania Dance Theatre. I would like to thank Igelese Ete and his entire production team for putting together a very colorful and lively performance on uniting against climate change. Regardless of who we are and where we live, we are all affected by climate change.

Our appreciation also goes to the Queen’s Young Leader, Elisha, and the 2018 Commonwealth Youth Awardee for Development Work, Elvis, for their support and the part they have played in this event.

It has certainly been an exceptional privilege to have members of the Royal Family visit USP and, as alluded to earlier by the Pro-Chancellor, this visit is the highlight of our golden jubilee celebrations. This is the best 50th anniversary experience we could have ever hoped for.

I wish you, Your Royal Highnesses, a safe and enjoyable journey ahead.

Thank You and Vinaka Vakalevu.
