United Nations/Fiji Workshop on the Applications of Global Navigation Satellite Systems

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in partnership with co-organisers The University of the South Pacific are hosting a week long workshop from the 24 to 28 of June, at the USP Laucala Campus. The workshop is titled “United Nations/Fiji Workshop on the Applications of Global Navigation Satellite Systems”. This event is also co-organised and co-sponsored by The International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG).

The purpose of the workshop is to address the use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for various applications that can provide sustainable social and economic benefits, in particular for developing countries.

The event will be attended by ninety participants working in fields that use GNSS. There will be representatives from at least 28 countries in the Asia, African, European and Oceania regions. This initiative is part of the UNOOSA aims to promote the use of GNSS on applications and capacity building activities across the world. The main objective of the workshop will be to reinforce the exchange of information between countries and scale up the capacities in the region pursuing the application of GNSS solutions.
 
There are six planned sessions for the weeklong event which are:
Session 1: Current and planned GNSS and Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems
Session 2: GNSS-Based applications focusing on a wide range of personal and professional use of GNSS technologies
Session 3: GNSS Spectrum protection and interference detection and mitigation
Session 4: Natural Hazards: GNSS for disaster management
Session 5: GNSS Reference Frames/Systems and Reference Station Networks
Session 6: Capacity-building, training and education in the field of GNSS

At the end of the workshop there are three main expected outcomes:

  1. recommendations and findings on discussed topics to be adopted by the workshop participants;
  2. preliminary agreement of cooperation between countries in the region and Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) networks;
  3. action plan addressing identified issues/concerns

The inauguration session of the workshop will be held on Monday 24th of June at the Japan ICT Centre. Over the course of the week from the 24 to 28 June, participants will be meeting at the Australia Pacific Lecture Theatre and the N111 Lecture theatre.
