Confucius Institute Graduation

The Chinese language courses provided by the Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific Lautoka Campus are becoming quite popular among the local Fijian students.

Speaking at the Semester 2 graduation ceremony for 2019 at the Lautoka campus on Tuesday November 12, USP Lautoka Campus Director Dr Pramila Devi stressed that graduating with a Chinese language learning certificate is an additional achievement for all the local students.

She emphasized that the commitment to learn a new language is an achievement in itself for the pupils. Dr.Devi pointed out that it is a pleasure for USP Lautoka Campus to conduct the classes in credit and social levels.

Beginnerís class student Shiv Bhan Singh revealed that given the fact that Chinese language has the largest number of speakers, greater advantages in the business and the pursuance of academic excellence motivated him to learn Mandarin.

Learning Mandarin is beneficial in a number of ways: Firstly, it helps the speaker to communicate with a large number of people. Secondly, as a frequent traveller, being a competent speaker of a foreign language widens oneís network of friends.
Given the high number of Chinese investors in the country, it is only prudent that I learn another language for ease of business and communication, Singh informed.

Third year student in Bachelor of Human Resource Development, Public Administration and Management Sisilia Desman revealed that it is very easy to learn the Chinese language and students can attain very good grades in this course. Ms. Desman informed that she has already completed her Level 1 and Level 2 credit courses and is planning to do level 3 from next semester. She revealed that she wants to undertake Chinese language program up to degree and Masters Level.

In August this year she also had the opportunity to visit China for two weeks to perform in an ancient martial art program Tai Chi. Ms. Desman has encouraged more youngsters to undertake the Chinese language courses from the USP Lautoka Campus and commended the Confucius Institute staff for creating a very conducive learning environment for the students.
