Job Evaluation

What is a Job Evaluation?

Job Evaluation is a systematic investigation of the tasks, duties and responsibilities of a job or position.

An analysis of the knowledge, skills and abilities or competencies someone needs, to perform competently in a position.

It may be defined as the process by which jobs are divided to determine what tasks, duties and responsibilities they include, their relationships to other jobs, the conditions under which work is performed and the personal capabilities required for satisfactory performance.

Purpose of a Job Evaluation

It is a basic HR activity that tags the position to the right salary scale for what the job is worth.

When should a position be evaluated?

When the duties of a position change significantly, either in the kind of work performed or in the level of responsibility required.

Please note: Job Evaluation is not an assessment of the personal merit or attributes of the occupant. Neither a greater volume of the same work nor isolated occurrences of higher duties are justification alone for reclassification.

How do I prepare an application?

Requests for a reclassification of a position must include an explanatory letter or memorandum from the Head of Department recommending the reclassification and effective date; and an up-to-date Job Description signed and dated by Head of Section/Department. All applicants must fill in the Job Evaluation application form.

Where do I submit my application?

Applications must be submitted to the Human Resource Office by the advertised date.

When can I apply for my position evaluation?

The Job Evaluation Committee meets three times a year. Dates of meetings are advertised on the webpage and through the All Staff Email System (Tukutuku).
