Databases and Digital Collections

Pacific Islands Marine Portal

The Pacific Islands Marine Portal project is a collaborative project between the Pacific Islands Marine Resources Information System (PIMRIS) and the UNESCO IOC IODE Project Office (Oostende, Belgium)  to improve access to Pacific marine information for the Pacific Islands community. The portal  contains news, articles and directories of websites relevant to Pacific fisheries and to the coastal and marine environment of the Pacific.

Moana database

A bibliographic database of Pacific marine literature maintained in 1987-2006 by the PIMRIS Coordination Unit. The database covers living and non-living marine resources specific to Pacific Island countries and includes library holdings from the University of the South Pacific (USP), Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC), Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and national centres (national marine/fisheries departments).

PIMRIS Regional Repository

The regional e-repository of published and unpublished documents produced by marine and fisheries departments in the Pacific Island Countries. Available in digitized format are annual reports, project reports, working papers and articles.

USP Aquatic Repository

The collection includes documents on marine and freshwater living and non-living resources produced by the staff of the institutions affiliated with the University of the South Pacific. Collection provides freely available publications such as research and technical reports, theses, preprints, published articles and more.

Participant Catalogues

The holdings of many individual PIMRIS participant libraries are accessible to Internet users. These include:

  • SPREP's combined Information Resource Centre and PEIN (Pacific Environmental Information Network) Online Database
  • USP's Library catalogue (note that this includes the entire holdings of the USP Libraries; to limit a search to the items held at the PIMRIS Coordination Unit, go to the Advanced search screen and select PIMRIS from the drop down list for Location before adding search terms to the boxes above ).

Non-PIMRIS participants are free to search any of these catalogues, but requests for loans or document supply will be subject to the conditions of the particular library concerned.

Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA)

The PIMRIS Coordination Unit and SPC are both contributors to this international database maintained by the FAO. By agreement with FAO and the publisher of ASFA, access to the online database for academic and research purposes is available from within these institutions. For USP staff and students, a link appears on the Library's Online Databases and Indexes page and a password can be obtained from the Information Desk in the Main Library or the Lower Campus Library.

Other Databases

ReefBase is the official database of the Global Coral Reef monitoring Network (GCRMN), as well as the International Coral Action Network (ICRAN). The ReefBase Project is housed at the WorldFish Centre in Penang, Malaysia. It includes a searchable database of coral reef citations with links to full articles or reports (where available).

The Pacific Island Legal Information Institute (PacLii) site contains a database of regional legislation, court cases and other legal documents, which can be searchable by country or topic (eq. fisheries, marine resources, etc.)

New Publications

All authors and/or publishers of Pacific marine-related publications (including journal articles) are encouraged to deposit copies of these with the PIMRIS Coordination Unit. These will be deposited in the University Library's Pacific Collection for preservation and inclusion in regional bibliographies and the University's Library catalogue, making them accessible to all Internet users. Items will also be recorded in the Moana database and, where possible, distributed to all PIMRIS participants.
