Fiji Chinese Communities Celebrate the 2014 New Year

More than 800 guests got together at Yat Sen School on February 2, 2014 to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The Prime Minister of Fiji Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama and his wife, the Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Huang Yong and his wife, and the Minister for Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation Dr. Jiko Luveni attended the activity.

The Prime Minister greeted the audience using Chinese “Ni Hao”, and said he felt very happy that he and his family could celebrate the most important traditional festival of China together with more than 1 billion Chinese people globally. He wished a very happy new year of Horse to all the Chinese people, and acknowledged the great contribution the Chinese Fijians made to the society, economy and culture of Fiji.

During the celebration, the Chinese lion dance, fan dance, ribbon dance and drumming were performed. The children also brought a Happy New Year dance. In the lion performance, the Prime Minister joined in the “Cai Qing” (Plucking the greens) custom, and experienced the happy atmosphere.

The Chinese teachers of the Confucius Institute at USP (CI-USP) prepared some quizzes about Chinese language and culture, so that the audience could also appreciate the long history of China, the profound culture and language when celebrating the festival. The audience also participated in the interactive games, tug of war, eating bread and music chair. The atmosphere was vibrant and happy, full of laughter.

This event was co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, various Chinese associations in Fiji, and the Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific. It aimed to celebrate the traditional Chinese Spring Festival, and at the same time, it introduced contemporary Chinese culture, enhanced the friendship between the people of Fiji and China, and expanded the influences of China and the local Chinese communities in the society of Fiji.

The Prime Minister and his family, 19 people, attended this activity. The Confucius Institute at USP presented the T-Shirts with CI-USP logo and the calendar of the Year of Horse from the Confucius Institute Headquarters to his family for a good memory.
