The success of “Chinese Culture Day” program

On January 15 and 16, 2015, the Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific (CI-USP) co-held “Chinese Culture Day” program with Fiji Museum. In these two days, more than 100 Fijian students took part in the program, learning and experiencing Chinese culture. Fiji’s Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Dr. Mahendra Reddy and Charge d’ Affairs of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Yang Zhaohui attended and made speech in the two-day programs respectively.

In delivering his opening address, Dr Reddy said “Fiji is a multi-cultural society and this is the kind of initiative that will strengthen the bond amongst the different cultural groups that exist in our beloved nation. To the students participating today, make the most of it and absorb as much as you can”. Dr Mahendra Reddy also acknowledged the effort of The University of the South Pacific's (USP) Confucius Institute (CI) in “investing in the lives of young children”. On the second day, Chinese Charge d’ Affairs, Mr. Yang Zhaohui delivered a speech with simple and interesting languages on Chinese Culture and basic knowledge of China and Fiji. He wished students to deepen their knowledge on China and Chinese culture through this program.

The purpose of the program is to let children know more about Chinese culture. At first, students were informed, through PPT, with the tradition of Spring Festival. Then some students tried in person to make the traditional Chinese food. Some students chose to make or paint Chinese national treasure—panda and some learned to use the four Treasures of Chinese Study, namely,Chinese writing brush, Chinese ink, Chinese writing paper and ink slab. During the program, students also enjoyed themselves through Chinese national sports—table tennis, and Chinese traditional game—rope skipping. In the program, all the Chinese and Fijian teachers at CI, USP organized every activity carefully, and also prepared students awards and abundant Chinese food for lunch. All the students took active part in the activities and had a great fun. The parents who accompanied students were also very much satisfied with the program.

This program serves as the prelude for the Happy Spring Festival Activities proposed by Chinese Embassy in Fiji.
