The Guest Lecture Held at Confucius Institute at USP

On February 17th, Confucius Institute at USP (CI-USP) held its first guest lecture in 2015. Professor Wadan Narsey,a famous economist in south pacific region was invited to give a presentation with the topic of “China’s role in the Pacific-with focus on Fiji, PNG, Solomon Island and Vanuatu”. All the teacher and staff of CI-USP attended the lecture.

In welcome address, Chinese director of CI- USP, Professor Li Denggui first briefly introduced Professor Wadan Narsey’s academic achievement and acknowledged his support and assistance to CI-USP including book donation and serving as afterschool activity counsellor of CI-USP. In a warm round applause, Professor Narsey started his presentation. He first thanked CI-USP for its effort in organizing the guest lecture. Then, in the body part of the presentation, he introduced and explained the general situation of the South Pacific, the regional demographics and economy in island countries, the Melanesian  development strategy and the influence of China Aid program on the South Pacific and China Threat Theory. Professor Narsey said that poor Manufacture infrastructure in South Pacific countries including Fiji, Solomon and Vanuatu have impeded their social development and local life standard improvement, though these areas are rich in husbandry, forestry and tourism resources. Therefore, Prof. Wadan suggested China Aid to South Pacific countries should help the aided countries maximize the potential of their already-have resources and upgrade the holistic market competitiveness. When analyzing Fiji’s unique development, Wadan said there were three fields could be focused, namely, 1) upgrading tourism industry level;2) establishing global call center by taking advantage of local people’s good English proficiency; 3)and setting up senior citizen day care center targeting Australian and New Zealand market. Generally speaking, China Aid to Fiji and other South Pacific countries with no shadow of hegemonic and imperialism has gained China a sound image among local people and he also expressed his confidence in the cooperation between China and other South Pacific countries.

At the end of the Guest Lecture, on behalf of CI-USP Chinese Director Li Denggui thanked Professor Wadan Narsey and presented a gift to him. All the attendants were also invited to take a picture with Professor Wadan Narsey.
