Mother Language Day Competition

SLAM has just launched the 2019 round of its essay competition, which is run every year to commemorate International Mother Language Day. Mother Language Day is held on 21st February to celebrate linguistic diversity around the world. Since UNESCO has designated 2019 to be the Year of Indigenous Languages, SLAM is focusing the competition this year on the importance of passing languages on from one generation to another.

SLAM is inviting students aged 11-19 to write an essay on the following topics:

(Ages 11-15) “Things I've learnt by talking to my grandparents about language.”

(Ages 16-19) “What languages will I speak to my children? Why does it matter?”

Students are encouraged to write their essays in their mother tongue.

The deadline for submissions is Friday 17 May. Full details can be found at www.usp.ac.fj/motherlanguageday
