“Why I came all the way down to study Fijian syntax”

Good question! This was the title Raúl Aranovich chose for his talk on the admittedly recondite topic of noun incorporation in Fijian.

Dr Raúl Aranovich, who is Assistant Professor of linguistics at the University of California at Davis, in the USA, described himself at the beginning of his visit to Laucala campus as an “armchair” Fijian language specialist.

Raúl is interested in syntax and has studied the structure of many languages, in search of features which may be common to languages from different parts of the world.

He came across some references to Fijian, which turned out to be a particularly interesting language with respect to his pet topic, noun incorporation. He decided recently that it was time to get out of the armchair and get down to Fiji.

During his two week attachment to SLAM, Raúl worked with two third year Fijian students majoring in linguistics, Kalivati Qolicokota and Mikaele Sela, eliciting language data from them in order to refine his analysis of Fijian syntax.

He shared his findings and interpretation during a seminar and declared himself keen to come back for more. Bye-bye, armchair!
