Poets regather at Traps

Sept 26, 06: Pacific Writers Forum returns to Traps back bar

Dr Kavita Nandan delivers her masterpiece

On Wednesday 26 September the most recent Pacific Writer's Forum reading night was held at Traps, a resumption of an old tradition.

The reading night was held to raise funds for Bluff Kine Productions, which consists of a very talented group of young student filmmakers from USP, whose first short film
'The Homecoming' is currently in production.

Several members of the cast and crew read on the night, including producer Bhavna Vithal and director Luisa
Torah Singh, and Cresantia Frances Koya and Anurag Subramani.

Other highlights included a performance of John Pule's poetry, set to music, by John and Calvin Rore, and the poetry of Andrew Peek, the PWF writer-in-residence from the University of Tasmania. One particula highlight was the first reading in Suva by Sybil Johnson, whose charismatic
'beat' poetry was accompanied by her son, Don, on drums.

Students from the USP creative writing program read for the first time, and their work was greeted warmly by the younger than usual crowd. It was also good to see the
faces of well known local writers Larry Thomas and Epeli Hau'ofa and other familiar faces amongst them.

Thanks to TRAPS, and all those who attended for
supporting the work of the up-and-coming filmmakers of Bluff Kine Productions.'
