USP to feature in World OER Congress

The world will congregate at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris France for the World Open Educational Resources (OER) Congress from the 20th to the 22nd June, 2012. Open Educational Resources are any type of materials in the public domain or released with an open license that allows anyone, to legally and freely copy, use, adapt and re-share. These materials include course outlines, assignments, text books and audio-visual material.

The aims of the Congress are to:

  • Release the 2012 Paris OER Declaration;
  • Showcase the world’s best practices in Open Educational Resources policies, initiatives, experts; and
  • Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2002 UNESCO Forum that coined the term Open Educational Resources (OER).

Given USP’s deep-seated commitment to OERs, USP is sending a seven member delegation to the congress and will have a USP open exhibition booth, feature as a panelist on the reflection panel and make a joint presentation with other OER university advocates around the world.

The Congress aims to encourage more governments to adopt policies that include OERs and will bring together Ministers of Education/Human Resource Developers senior policy makers, expert practitioners, researchers and relevant stakeholders.

It is a 2-part event with an official negotiation component by UNESCO Member States and selected invited organisations and individuals negotiating the text of the 2012 Paris Declaration, and an open exhibition of OER practices and workshops and seminars.

The Congress will also be streamed live on the web beginning from Wednesday 20 June at 11.30am Paris time up until Friday 22nd June.
