professor donald paterson

Over the last 6 months a number of aspects of the criminal justice system in Vanuatu have been highlighted in the local newspapers. This provoking seminar will discuss and comment on some important issues raised in these cases such as:

         the process for imprisonment for contempt of court;

  • The absence of orders for the recovery of the proceeds of crime against the children of Michel Ockten;

  • Charges and prosecution against some lawyers, but not others, involved in complicity to pervert the course of justice; and

  • Failures to comply with the constitutional requirement of a fair hearing within a reasonable time in parts of Vanuatu.
