Call for Papers: A Sea of Norms - Laws and other Orders in the South Pacific.

CALL FOR PAPERS

A SEA OF NORMS:

LAWS AND OTHER ORDERS IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC

A Project/Conference/Network - 6-10 August 2018 The University of the South Pacific (USP, Suva, FIJI)

The normative environment of the Pacific was, and is, as thick and varied as its ecosystems. In both the past and the present, its laws and normative orders were no more closed and static than its borders. Each was entangled and dynamic, generating both new hybridities and identities.

Modern Pacific cultures and societies exemplify this complexity. Old and new traditions join and jostle, generating ever more hybrid forms. Pacific Islanders move fluidly in this sea of norms. But they may be victims, too, of currents over which they and their institutions have little control. No land, that is, is really an island.

This multi-disciplinary conference brings together scholars – anthropologists, historians, jurists, political scientists, sociologists, and others – to explore, through case studies of the region, the challenges for research on, and understanding of, the laws and norms of the Pacific.

Proposals of no more than 250 words must be submitted no later than 30 March 2018 to Joseph D. Foukona at Joseph.Foukona(at)vanuatu.usp.ac.fj. Limited financial assistance is available to participants from the Pacific, including those from institutions in the Pacific Island Universities Research Network (PIURN). Self-funded participants, from the region and beyond, may also apply.

The event is organised as part of USP’s Fiftieth Anniversary, with the assistance of PIURN Funding. With sufficient interest, a multi-disciplinary research network will be established. And organisers will asssist in ensuring publication of research generated by the conference.
