PacLII Funding Renewed

Approval of a new funding grant for the Pacific Islands Legal Information Institution.

The Pacific Islands Legal Information Institute (PacLII) is a project of the School of Law on Emalus Campus. It is now the major resource for law reporting in the Pacific region and provides access to primary legal resource material online and free of charge.

A new grant of substantial funding has been approved for the period 2006-2008. The project will be funded jointly by NZAID and by AusAID.

The funding grants will enable PacLII to undergo considerable expansion in both staffing and the scope of the operation and further development of its core activities. It has recently taken on the role of official reporter of PNG materials and there remains much material from the South Pacific region yet to be published.

There remain some fine details to be sorted out in relation to project definition but this will be done over the next couple of months.  The new grant assures the Pacific region of the availability of a highly effective law reporting resource which has already transformed the nature of legal research in the Pacific region. PacLII is a resource for the Pacific and global legal communities whilst remaining a major asset to staff and students at USP.

Considerable thanks must be accorded to both NZAID and AusAID for their generous support of the project. Also it must be acknowledged that PacLII could not have been developed to its current state without the considerable support and assistance of its sister institution AustLII which is a joint project of the Law Faculties of the University of New South Wales and the University of Technology at Sydney.
