Aesthetes Gather to Mark AAAF 2024 Launch

The celebration of Pacific arts and culture resonated throughout the launch of the Allan Alo Arts Festival (AAAF) 2024, held last night at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala Campus.

The event, hosted at the Oceania Art Gallery, was highlighted by the unveiling of a retrospective exhibition showcasing artworks that embody the teachings and vision of the late Allan Alo and Epeli Hau’ofa.

The Gallery also holds special significance, not only as a beacon of cultural and artistic expression in the region but also as the place where Allan’s remarkable journey began.

This year’s festival opened with a stunning performance, followed by a captivating exhibition of renowned Pacific artists. It sets the stage for a vibrant celebration that promises to captivate audiences by focusing on Pacific cultural heritage, with contributions from regional guest artists as well as students of the late Allan Alo in Fiji.

Officiating the festival launch, Deputy Head of the School of Pacific Arts, Communication and Education (SPACE), Dr Rosiana Lagi, remarked, “The launch is not just the beginning of a week-long festival; it is a celebration of the enduring spirit of Pacific arts and an opportunity to honor Allan Alo’s contributions, reflect on the past, and look forward to the future with creative hope.”

Starting today, attendees can witness dynamic performances, engage in enriching workshops, and participate in cultural exchanges that bridge histories and inspire future generations.

The festival will also serve as a catalyst for change, driving youth development through the power of performing arts, inspired by Allan Alo, whose pioneering contributions have left an indelible mark on the Pacific performing arts landscape.

Today’s programme, titled “Ancestral Echoes: Unveiling Legacies,” features traditional and cultural exchange workshops with local and visiting artists at the Oceania Pavilion at USP’s Laucala Campus in Suva, Fiji.

The festival will continue until Saturday, offering a variety of workshops, exciting shows, and remarkable performances. For an exclusive experience of Pacific arts, tickets are available for the festival’s grand finale on Friday and Saturday this week.
