The second day of the Advancing Ocean Learning: Navigating Knowledge in the Pacific conference at The University of the South Pacific (USP) in Laucala opened on a high note, marked by dynamic discussions, powerful insights, and renewed commitment to ocean sustainability across the region.
Former President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, opened the day with an inspiring message, emphasising the vital role of regional universities like USP in bridging knowledge gaps through education, vocational training, and research.
“Universities hold the key to strengthening ocean literacy at all levels,” he said, setting the tone for a day two of the conference centered on knowledge empowerment and regional cooperation.
Over 200 participants, including policymakers, educators, researchers, youth, and community leaders, engaged in interactive sessions under two key themes:
Coastal Fisheries and Marine Resource Management – Discussions spotlighted the integration of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), inclusive education, sustainable harvesting, and innovations addressing climate challenges and IUU (illegal, unreported, and unregulated) fishing. A strong call was made to recognise the role of women and youth in fisheries and ocean governance.
Marine Sustainable Development – Conversations explored the balance between economic growth and environmental protection, highlighting marine biodiversity finance, ocean governance frameworks, pollution control, and the need for marine spatial planning.
Participants shared success stories from across the Pacific, exchanged best practices, and proposed innovative solutions to regional ocean challenges. A recurring message was clear: inclusive education and community-driven action are key to achieving a sustainable ocean future.
The conference, which runs over three days, is part of the Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership (PEUMP) Programme, a EUR 45 million initiative co-funded by the European Union and the Government of Sweden.
It is implemented by regional partners including, The Pacific Community (SPC), Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and USP.
