The Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP) celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year.
The CROP was first endorsed by Pacific Islands Forum Leaders in 1988 as an overarching committee for regional organisations in the Pacific. Its original name was the South Pacific Organisations’ Coordinating Committee.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Education (SOEd) successfully completed a Curriculum Alignment Workshop at Suva’s Grand Pacific Hotel on 16-18 August 2018.
Professor Govinda Lingam, Head of SOEd said the workshop was organised to take stock of the School’s progress in relation to curriculum review and development work to date, including documenting and planning.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) held a special memorial service to celebrate the life of Professor William (Bill) Aalbersberg on 16 August 2018, at the University’s Marine Studies Campus at Laucala.
Professor Aalbersberg joined USP as the Lecturer in Chemistry in 1984. He was later promoted to Senior Lecturer and Reader in Chemistry and then in 1997 to Professor of Natural Products Chemistry.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) handed the Fiji Government a cheque of $5639.96, collected from a flood appeal on July 31 2018.
In an official ceremony at the Laucala Campus, the cheque was presented to the Honourable Mrs Mereseini Vuniwaqa, Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation by Professor Richard Coll, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Learning, Teaching and Student Services (LTSS), and Mr Glenn Pope, the Group Manager Campus Life.

Six (6) volunteers from the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have successfully completed the Intensive English Programme (IEP) offered by The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Language, Arts and Media (SLAM).
IEP is a general English language programme offered four (4) times a year and taught at six (6) competency levels comprising the four (4) macro skills – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) hosted a Career and Internship 2018 programme at the Laucala Campus on 6-10 August 2018.
The annual event was coordinated by the Career and Entrepreneurial Centre, and featured 60 top employers who were invited to showcase their services to students as potential employees.

A cohort of students with firsthand knowledge and experience in climate change adaptation and disaster risk management are currently enrolled at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) for a formal qualification.
According to Dr. Helene Jacot Des Combes from the Pacific Centre for Environment & Sustainable Development (PaCE-SD), this has been enabled through the support of the EU-PacTVET project, funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented in conjunction with The Pacific Community.

Healthy and successful small Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that harbour healthy coral assemblages become attractive to large coral consumers that could threaten MPA stability and contribute to the dramatic global decline in coral reefs.
