The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Confucius Institute (CI) co-hosted the Conference on Chinese Language Education at the Laucala Campus on 17thand 18thAugust 2019 with the Consortium of Advanced Subjects of New Zealand (CAS-NZ) and the Pinnacle Education Group. Special support was provided by Jinan University, Higher Education Press and Cheng & Tsui Publishing.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) researchers from the United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) One Ocean Hub Global Challenges Research Fund project joined the international team for a planning workshop on the first week of August in Cape Town, South Africa.
Sixty-six (66) researchers from eight countries met to undertake detailed planning for the next five years.
The One Ocean Hub aims to transform USP’s response to the urgent challenges facing our ocean.

The University of the South Pacific hosted a pitching event, where the best startups from Suva pitch competed to be crowned the most promising seed-stage startup of Seedstars Suva 2019 at the Japan-Pacific ICT Multi-Purpose Theatre on 15 August.
TraSeable Solutions was crowned the winner with its pitch on delivering value for your seafood products through trust and technology giving you an edge in the marketplace. Eco Conscience (Fiji) settled for second place with a focus on online business or eco-hub. 51 USP students admitted as legal practitioners - 20 Aug 2019 04:26:43 pm
Fifty-one (51) students of The University of the South Pacific (USP), 30 of whom are women were admitted to the Bar as legal practitioners at the High Court in Suva on 16 August 2019.
Justice Kamal Kumar, Acting Chief Justice congratulated the new practitioners on their success. He advised that they will get a lot of respect and must note that the legal profession always requires them to act with integrity and dignity. He welcomed them saying the legal profession, which they are now a part of, is a noble profession.

Eight (8) students selected from four secondary schools in Suva were part of the first round of the “FIRST Global Challenge” at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala Campus on 16 August 2019.
The schools are Suva Grammar School, YatSen Secondary School, Jai Narayan College and MGM High School which sent two-member teams each, comprising both male and female to represent Team Fiji, mentored by USP’s Dr Utkal Mehta.

A student of The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) has won the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme award to undertake Tourism and Hospitality Management postgraduate studies at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
An elated Ms Farisha Nisha, who hails from Ba, will soon depart Fiji to take up her three-year award.

NZ Minister commissions new Tuvalu Campus satellite antenna - 16 Aug 2019 09:10:01 am
The University of the South Pacific (USP) Tuvalu Campus’ new satellite antenna was commissioned by Honourable Aupito William Sio, New Zealand Minister for Pacific People on 13 August 2019.
The new SM-T4.5R C-Band satellite antenna is one of two funded by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade (MFAT) for USP’s Tuvalu Campus as part of the NZMFAT-funded USPNet Infrastructure Upgrade project - where regional campuses will be receiving new C-Band satellite antennae to replace end of life infrastructure that was installed in 2000.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) organised a successful Career and Internship Fair 2019 for at the Laucala Campus from 6 – 9 August, 2019.
With the theme “Careers and Employability,” the Fair was attended by hundreds of students wishing to pursue careers in their respective fields of study.
A total of around 60 top employers from around Fiji who were invited to be part of the two days exposition were present at the student car park.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Tuvalu Campus and the Funafuti Kaupule has officially received ownership of a DJI Mavic drone for research purposes.
The drone was received from Ms. Darya Chernikhova representing Oceans Unmanned on 31 July 2019 following a presentation from Dr. Rosiana Lagi, Tuvalu Campus Director on ‘Kogapuipui Tuvaluan Traditional Conservation Concept – Impacts’ at the Student Conference on Conservation Science at the Centre of Biodiversity and Conservation. The conference was held at the American Museum Natural History in New York in October, 2018.
