At USP, the Oceania Dance Theatre (ODT) offers dancers a platform to shine while embracing the rich heritage of the Pacific. As a form of artistic expression, dance is movement, a language, a story and a celebration of culture.
Roko Unaisi Finau Likusuasua Banivanua, a senior member and choreographer at ODT, exemplifies the richness, pride, resilience and commitment poured into this creative art form.
Hailing from Lau, with maternal links to Tavualevu, Roko’s passion for dance was ignited during her childhood. Her mother would blast music in their living room, turning everyday moments into dance battles with her siblings.
These experiences nurtured her love for movement and storytelling, shaping her journey in the creative arts.
Roko’s dance journey with ODT began in 2022 when she joined as an artist. Her career highlights include performances at the Allan Alo Arts Festival, Fiji Fringe Festival, and Melanesian Day.
As a choreographer, Roko crafts captivating pieces that celebrate Pacific identity while pushing artistic boundaries, inspiring others to embrace their cultural roots.
“The energy, the diversity, and the community of artists here have truly enriched my journey as a dancer and has allowed me to deepen my craft,” she shares.
“Balancing dance with the responsibilities of motherhood requires careful planning, adaptability, and a strong support system.”
“I create a structured routine that allows me to dedicate quality moments to both my son and my passion for dance. While early mornings and late evenings are reserved for rehearsals or personal practice, my afternoons are focused on being present for my child.”
With a reliable support network and a well-organised schedule, Roko successfully pursues her dreams while being the best mother she can be. She also aspires to become a full-time choreographer and the director of her own dance company.
