Physics Society Quiz high achievers rewarded at USP Ceremony

The high achievers of the South Pacific Physics Quiz with their certificates and prizes along with their school teachers.
The South Pacific Physics Society in conjunction with The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE) held a special awards ceremony to reward the top achievers of the Annual Physics Quiz on 3 November 2017.
Four (4) secondary school students, among the eight (8) top achievers scooped prize money for their outstanding performance in the quiz.
Dr. Abhikesh Kumar, Quiz coordinator said the response to the quiz was excellent given the short notice the schools were given.
A total of forty six (46) schools from the Central, Western and Northern divisions and one school from Taveuni responded to the call, producing a total of 1222 candidates for the four exams held from the Year 10 to Year 13 levels.
Dr Anirudh Singh, Society President said there was a world-wide demand for teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects to support technological development.
Dr Singh thanked Associate Professor Anjeela Jokhan, Dean of FSTE for her continuing support, and pointed out that the Faculty had earlier given full financial and staffing support for the Society’s Year 13 Physics Laboratory Workshop which it organised in the Central, Western and Northern Divisions from June-July this year.
These workshops, organised by Mr Amol Kishore, Vice President of the Society, had attracted a total of seventy (70) schools with the number of students participation exceeding 1200.
Associate Professor Jokhan said that the Faculty realised the importance of Physics and Maths as core subjects for the development of Science and Technology in the region.
The Faculty administration was eager to do all it could to promote and re-vitalise interest amongst school students in these subjects.
The remaining four winners of the special award will have their prizes delivered to them through special arrangement.
The recipients were amongst the eight top achievers in the annual Physics Quiz organised by the Society on 6 September 2017 in all divisions.
